Weekly Lesson Sermon
A unique difference between Christian Science and all other Christian denominations is who it is that is ordained to preach the word of God. After much prayerful thought Mrs. Eddy was led to ordain The Bible and Science and Health, with Key to the Scriptures as the only pastors for her church. By turning those wanting to learn more about God directly to the written word of God, she made the personal touch and teaching of the pastor ever-available to those in need of help, healing, and instruction.
Sunday services in a Christian Science church are built around a prepared lesson of citations read alternately from The Bible and Science and Health by two members of the local congregation. Mrs. Eddy established twenty-six different lesson topics, one to be read each week, that, in their totality, give an overview of the fundamental teachings of Christian Science. While the topics repeat twice a year, the individual citations making up each lesson are new each time.
In reading and studying these lessons it is helpful to understand Mrs. Eddy's use of seven synonyms to describe the nature and character of God. On page 465 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy answers the question, "What is God?," with the following statement - "God is incorporeal, divine, supreme, infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, Love." Just as sunlight is really composed of the colors of the spectrum, so the fullness of God is best understood as the composite of the intelligent consciousness of Mind, the omnipotence and omnipresence of Spirit, the richness of Soul, the certainty of Principle, the eternal reality of Life, the purity of Truth, and the tender embrace of ever present Love. When the words "Mind," "Soul," "Love," etc. are capitalized in Science and Health, the reference is always to God.
